Massachusetts Electrician Exam: How 527 CMR and the NEC Fit Together

Massachusetts doesn't use the NEC as printed. The state adopts the NEC with amendments in 527 CMR 12.00, and Massachusetts currently enforces the 2023 NEC as amended. Where the amendment differs from the national text, the amendment wins, on the job and on a state test.

How to study both

  1. Use the NEC edition your exam lists (confirm with the Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Electricians).
  2. Get the 527 CMR 12.00 amendments.
  3. Mark every amended article in your code book with one dedicated tab color.
  4. On every lookup, check for a state amendment before you answer.
